Ingrid Our Guide and Inspiration

This picture shows a fun loving woman, but she comes from a very
difficult past. Ingrid, our guide was a little girl living in Vienna
Austria during WWII; she was born in 1939. Her father was a Resistant
during the war and he was taken from their home in April 1943. It was
said they took him to Dachau. They never heard from him or saw him
again. It is believed he probably met his end in Dachau. I wish he
could have known his daughter, Ingrid. She is such a lovely person;
still working at 74. She loves history, but she loves people more.
Ingrid has given us insight to what it was like as a child during
WWII. They wore the same clothes (one pair of pants made by her
mother) for 3 years. They wore shoes for about the same amount of time
but only on Sundays and when their feet grew too long it was time to
cut the front of the shoe to continue wearing the same pair. Food was
scarce; Ingrid remembers having to give up her doll for 2 dozen eggs.
And Ingrid's mother was left to raise two children by herself as was
the way for many women as most men never made it home. Ingrid's
husband was also a guide for Trafalgar; he retired 2 years ago at 76.
Whew! These Austrians work a long time! I think maybe Ingrid will live
to be 110 years old.
