Barrack in Dachau

This is an example of the barracks on Dachau; the actual barracks have
been taken down because they were too dilapidated. There were 34
barracks in Dachau. They were designed to accommodate 200 prisoners
but toward the end of the War they were overcrowded with up to 2,000
prisoners on each barracks.
The camp opened on March 22, 1933 and first held political prisoners.
It served as a model for other concentration camps and as a school of
violence for SS men. In the 12 years of it's existence over 200,000
persons from all over Europe were imprisoned here and the numerous
subsidiary camps. More than 41,500 ( probably many more than) died
here. On April 29, 1945 American troops liberated the survivors.
