Remnants of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was put up in one day in August 1960. When word
spread that the wall was going up, many in the East defected. It was
12 ft high and 100 miles of wall. There was 28 miles more in Berlin
of double wall with electronic fencing in between the two walls. When
someone tried to escape, they did not take identification in case they
were caught because their family would also be persecuted. The wall
still stands at the East Side Gallery that now bears many paintings as
you can see in some of the pictures.
Actually it was West Berlin that was walled in but the Soviet rule did
not allow East Germans to go in West Berlin. The West Berlin area was
a concession by the Soviets to give some of Berlin to USA and Britain.
West Berliners could go to West Germany through Checkpoint Charlie.
The division between East and West Germany was heavily patrolled but
there was no wall there. Soviet rule imposed a way of life decided by
the country; they told you where you worked, lived, etc.
Kathy and Tom stand by a wall remnant.

  1. It's so hard imagining living in a country where you can't leave. Must be something else to see the wall.
